Migraine Pain in Woman's Neck

A systematic review published in the 2012 Journal of Chiropractic and Osteopathy found spinal manipulation to be effective for migraine and cervicogenic headaches, two of the most common and debilitating types of headaches afflicting sufferers. A similar study, published in the 2011 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, to help with chronic migraines and cervicogenic (Tension) Headaches.

Even cluster headaches which are characterized by intense, excruciating pain can be eased with the help of chiropractic therapy and other preventative measures. Dr. Koch is a migraine chiropractor who has experience using gentle headache chiropractic adjustments to help relieve your headache. Other treatments we offer include headache massage therapy, physical exams, and spinal decompression therapy. Contact us for relief!

Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are a chronic disorder, experienced by an estimated 25 million people in the United States. Migraines are more common in women, however men are susceptible as well. These headaches are typically characterized by:

Migraines tend to be unilateral and pulsating in nature. These headaches can last anywhere from 2 to 72 hours, and can be debilitating.

Cause of Migraines

There is no proven cause of migraine headaches, but they are believed to be a neurovascular disorder. There are many triggers which can cause migraine headaches, from lack of sleep and stress to changing weather patterns and certain types of foods which contain high levels of the amino acid tyramine. Dr. Koch is an experienced headache chiropractor and will perform gentle hedache chiropractic adjustments to help ease the stress and help to reduce the frequency and painful symptoms of your migraine headaches.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches, also known as tension headaches, tend to originate in your shoulders, neck and spine. These headaches can be caused by certain neck movements and/or a long period of awkward head positioning. Tension headaches are especially common among desk workers and are also associated with poor posture.

Typically, subluxations in the upper back and neck are to blame. A subluxation occurs when the top cervical vertebrae is out of normal position. This causes a small muscle called the rectus capitis posterior minor (a small muscle located at the base of the skull) to spasm, triggering the headache pain.

Cervicogenic headaches are often accompanied by the restriction of your cervical range of motion and ipsilateral neck, shoulder or arm pain. Cervicogenic headaches are also commonly caused by injuries to your neck, shoulders or spine, which take an extended period of time to heal. Dr. Koch is experienced in diagnosing and helping with the relief of cervicogenic headaches. Constant headaches don’t have to be a normal part of your day, start feeling better with the help of Dr. Koch chiropractic care.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches tend to be very short in duration, occurring in cyclical patterns. However they are excruciatingly painful and typically felt behind the eyes or on one side of the head. Unlike migraine headaches, cluster headaches affect only about 1 million people, most commonly men.

Spinal manipulation of the atlas (first cervical vertebrae) can help reduce the severity of pain associated with cluster headaches. In many cases, patients who receive chiropractic help have long lasting benefits, even after chiropractic therapy ended.

In addition to chiropractic relief, Dr. Koch in Milwaukee is happy to share tips and tricks for preventing headaches such as getting daily light exercise to simple diet changes.
