Turn to Your South Milwaukee Chiropractor Before Pain KILLERS

Dr Koch Chiropractic Discusses Pain MedicationOne of the many responsibilities a parent has is to guide their children through the maze of obstacles which may be potentially harmful to them. What becomes frustrating is when you don’t think your child fully appreciates the real and present dangers they may be heading into.  They don’t necessarily deny these dangers exist, they just don’t think they will ever be affected.

As a conservative South Milwaukee Chiropractic health care provider, I at times feel like one of these parents as I discuss the potential pitfalls of dealing with neck and back pain using pills.

 CONTACT DR. KOCH

I was thinking along these lines when I was reviewing an article published in the Los Angeles Times dated September 17, 2011. We all know the government keeps data on mortality factors, i.e., what are the most common causes of death in this country. For example, cardiovascular disease has long been the number one killer, followed by cancer, traffic deaths are down several notches. According to this article in the Times, a new threat has risen since 2009 to outpace traffic fatalities as one of the top killers of Americans. Since 2009, at least 37,000 people a year have died from prescription drugs, with the most common being pain medications. These drugs are killing more people than heroin and cocaine combined. What is most alarming are certain trends regarding these death tolls. For example in the years 2000 – 2008, death tolls more than doubled among teens and young adults. During this same period deaths more than tripled among people aged 50 – 69. Every fourteen minutes someone dies from prescription drugs in this country. Over five people (literally) died from prescription drug poisoning in the time it took me to write this article. The current trends show little signs of leveling off.

What can be done? Some feel these trends cannot be stopped, but perhaps we can slow them down. It is important for more conservative venues of health, such as chiropractic to continue to communicate just how dangerous these prescription drugs are and encourage our patients to tell friends, family and co-workers to try chiropractic care first.
